OIT UNIX Printserver Print Queue List

This is a list of the OIT UNIX printserver print queues defined on all OIT UNIX systems.

The first column contains the queue name followed by any aliases. The second column contains details about the queue. These generally correspond to the information provided on the Request To Establish a New Printserver Print Queue form by the person responsible for the printer. Additional explanations of the information that may appear in the table appear at the end of this document.

Sometimes the person responsible for a print queue wishes to not have it defined on the OIT UNIX Systems. The names and descriptions for printers not defined on the OIT UNIX Systems are intentionally omitted from this document, and are not published elsewhere. Depending on the operating system on each particular OIT UNIX System, this makes it less convenient (or in some cases impossible) to print to the particular print queue from that particular OIT UNIX System. (Some systems allow one to print only to the print queues defined on that system; others allow you to print to any print queue, if you know the print queue's name and remote LPD server name.)

On a OIT UNIX system, the printers command may also be used to list all the printserver print queues defined on that system. For each queue, it lists the primary name, aliases, and some (but not all) the details the appear in the table below. (See the UNIX man page for instructions.) Just as with the table below, if a print queue is set up on printserver, but is not defined on the system on which you execute the printers command (e.g. a OIT UNIX system), then the print queue will not be listed.

Notes

Below are notes explaining the meaning of the information that may appear in the table.

Name, Aliases

The primary name of the print queue is listed first; any aliases appear afterwards. Our convention is that the queue's primary name begins with an abbreviation indicating the printer's vendor (e.g. Apple, Hewlett Packard, Kodak, Lexmark, NEC, NeXT, Tektronix, Xerox), followed by the printer's building name and room name. (If a printer has been relocated or replaced without notifying printmaster, sometimes the queue name no longer reflects the printer's actual vendor or location.) Each queue typically includes at least one alias that is 14 characters or shorter, to allow it to be used from clients (e.g. Solaris) that do not support longer queue names.

Type

The vendor and model of the printer. Common abbreviations are: HP (Hewlett Packard), XE (Xerox), LW (Apple LaserWriter), and LJ (LaserJet).

Building, Room

The building and room where the printer is located.

Owner

The owner of the printer. In most cases, this is the name of the University department that owns the printer. In the case of a non-University printer, this is the private owner name.

Contact

The name, phone number, and email address of the person responsible for the printer. This person is responsible for resolving problems associated with the printer, and for contacting printmaster@princeton.edu when the printer's charactertistics change or when the printer will be powered off or disconnected for more than a few days.

Driven via TCP/IP-based protocol

The OIT printserver forwards the print job to another device on the Internet using Hewlett Packard's "TCP port 9100" protocol, which runs on top of TCP/IP. (This protocol is supported by some Hewlett Packard printers, as well as some Xerox printers. That remote device's Internet Host Name is displayed. (The remote device is usually the actual printer.)

Driven via AppleTalk

The OIT printserver forwards the print job to a LaserWriter-type device on the campus network using the AppleTalk protocol. The remote device's AppleTalk Name and AppleTalk Zone are displayed. (That remote device is usually the actual printer; it may instead be an AppleTalk Print Spooler which forwards the job elsewhere, or an AppleTalk bridge which passes the data directly to the actual printer.)
